Livestream and VOD delivery in China

Avatar

In China, internet access has increased five-fold over the past decade. Since China is an increasingly large part of the global economy, this means China is one of the most rapidly-growing markets for growing your audience. However, streaming to China has historically been a challenge for a number of reasons including: Content Restrictions, Slow Video Speeds, Blocked Services/Providers ("The Great Firewall"), and Server Locations.

At Brandlive, we will take the items listed above off of your plate if you are a Premium Support tier client. This will allow you to focus more on crafting your content and focus less on how you are going to deliver it to your audience in China. That being said, there are still a few items to keep in mind while tailoring your content for delivery in China.

1) For any Stream or VOD that you'd like to be delivered in China please first reach out to your Brandlive Project Manager to ensure that your account is set up properly. If you do not have a Project Manager assigned to your account please reach out to your Account Manager.

2) Please keep in mind that China has strict rules on what content is allowed to be streamed which includes, but is not exclusive to:

  • Politics
  • Names of Chinese dissidents or protest groups
  • Historical protests and footage
  • Pornography, adult & other sexual content including adult eCommerce
  • Gambling, violence and profane language
  • Consumption of alcohol
  • Content regarding Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet or Xinjiang
  • Entertainment content that portrays China negatively
  • Entertainment content that contains ‘Winnie the Pooh’

If you are unsure whether or not your content falls into any of these categories please reach out to your Project Manager to confirm.

3) Have your IT department assist you in whitelisting the following domains:

  • playback.dacast.cn
  • universe-cf-hls.dacast.cn
  • universe-cf-backup-hls.dacast.cn
  • vod-bsc.dacast.cn

4) It is optional but highly recommended to run a test with a sample group in China to confirm that all necessary page elements (engagement tools, registration pages, and the Live Stream) are able to load correctly.

Additionally, If you or your Networking team have an existing network that you'd like to leverage Brandlive's Proxy information can be found here.
